EN590 10ppm diesel is the European automotive gas oil standard requiring maximum 10 mg/kg sulphur, minimum 51 cetane number, and density between 820 and 845 kg/m3 at 15 degrees Celsius. Cargoes are priced against Platts ULSD assessments plus a negotiated origin differential, and buyers should specify the CFPP grade to match the destination climate before signing.

EN590 is the most frequently misquoted specification in international fuel trading. Buyers request "EN590 10ppm" and receive offers that reference the standard without meeting it — wrong CFPP grade for the delivery season, cetane numbers below the floor, or sulphur figures certified by a laboratory nobody can identify. The specification is precise. The offers circulating around it frequently are not.

For fuel distributors, fleet operators, mining contractors, and industrial buyers importing diesel at scale, the difference between a contract that references EN590 and a contract that enforces EN590 is measured in rejected cargoes, demurrage, and engine warranty claims.

What Is EN590 Diesel?

EN590 is the European Committee for Standardization specification defining the physical and chemical requirements for automotive diesel fuel sold across the European Economic Area, with the 10ppm designation referring to the maximum permitted sulphur content of 10 milligrams per kilogram.

The specification is not a single fixed recipe. It defines mandatory limits plus climate-dependent grades:

  • Sulphur content: Maximum 10.0 mg/kg — the ultra-low sulphur threshold that permits use in modern engines with diesel particulate filters and SCR aftertreatment
  • Cetane number: Minimum 51.0, with cetane index minimum 46.0 — governs ignition quality and cold-start behaviour
  • Density at 15 degrees Celsius: 820.0 to 845.0 kg/m3 — a figure that directly affects volumetric energy content and therefore price per litre versus price per metric tonne
  • Flash point: Above 55 degrees Celsius — a safety and classification threshold for storage and transport
  • Water content: Maximum 200 mg/kg, with total contamination maximum 24 mg/kg
  • FAME content: Maximum 7.0 percent volume for B7 grade, which matters for storage stability and microbial growth in long-hold tanks

CFPP Grades: The Clause Most Buyers Omit

Cold Filter Plugging Point defines the temperature at which diesel wax crystals block a fuel filter, and EN590 specifies six temperate grades from A to F plus five arctic classes, meaning a cargo can fully comply with EN590 and still gel in the destination climate.

This is the single most common source of avoidable disputes in diesel import contracts:

  • Grade A: CFPP maximum plus 5 degrees Celsius — summer specification only
  • Grade D: CFPP maximum minus 10 degrees Celsius — typical shoulder-season European grade
  • Grade F: CFPP maximum minus 20 degrees Celsius — northern European winter
  • Arctic classes 0 to 4: CFPP down to minus 44 degrees Celsius, with correspondingly reduced density ranges

A cargo sold as "EN590 10ppm" with no grade stated is an incomplete specification. Name the grade, name the delivery window, and require the certificate of quality to state the tested CFPP figure rather than a grade letter alone.

Platts Pricing and Origin Differentials

EN590 cargoes are conventionally priced as a differential to a published Platts ULSD or gasoil assessment for the relevant delivery basis, rather than as a flat negotiated number, because flat pricing transfers all market risk to whichever party guesses wrong.

The pricing structure has three components buyers should separate explicitly:

  • The benchmark: Platts CIF NWE Cargoes 10ppm, Platts FOB Rotterdam Barges, or Platts FOB Med — each carries a different logistics burden and should not be substituted casually
  • The pricing period: Bill of lading date, a five-day average around B/L, or a calendar month average — this choice can move settlement by several dollars per tonne in a volatile month
  • The differential: A premium or discount reflecting origin, quality margin above minimum spec, volume, credit terms, and counterparty risk

Verifying Quality Before You Pay

An EN590 certificate of quality is only as credible as the inspection company that issued it, the sampling method used, and the point in the supply chain at which the sample was drawn.

Robust verification requires all four of the following, and buyers who accept fewer are financing someone else's risk:

  • Independent inspection at load port: SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, or Saybolt — appointed jointly or by the buyer, never by the seller alone
  • Sealed retained samples: Minimum three sets held by the inspector, seller, and vessel, retained for the duration of any claim window
  • Full spec panel, not a partial: Certificates showing only sulphur and density are a warning sign; the panel should cover cetane, CFPP, flash point, water, and appearance
  • Traceable laboratory accreditation: ISO 17025 accreditation, verifiable against the certifying body's own register rather than a PDF supplied by the seller

Contract Terms That Actually Protect the Buyer

The commercial protection in a diesel import contract comes from the quality clause, the rejection threshold, and the inspection appointment mechanism — not from the specification reference itself.

  • Rejection rights: Define which parameters permit outright rejection versus which trigger a price allowance, and state the allowance formula in advance
  • Quantity tolerance: Typically plus or minus 5 percent in seller's option, priced at contract value rather than market value
  • Title and risk transfer: Aligned to the agreed Incoterm and to the payment instrument, so risk does not sit unfunded between two parties
  • Demurrage: Rate, laytime allowance, and the notice of readiness mechanism stated numerically, not by reference to "customary practice"
